UTP Cable

In an enterprise LAN, UTP cable is used to connect any two IP devices like computers, laptops,IP Phones,Switches,Printers or routers.

The UTP cable consists of copper wires twisted in pairs. Their ends are attached to RJ-45 connectors which are inserted into the RJ-45 ports of the IP devices.

The 10BASE-T  and 100BASE-T cables consists of two pairs of wires. One pair of wire will allow to pass the data in one direction and the other pair will pass the data in another direction.

To connect two different IP devices, a straight-through cable is used and to connect two different IP devices a crossover cable is used. Example to connect a PC and switch a straight-through cable is used and to connect two pc’s or two switches, a crossover cable is used.

Straight-through cable

In straight-through cable the 4 wires at both ends of the cable are connected to the same pins of the RJ-45 as shown in the below figure.

Crossover Cable

In Crossover cable the two ends of the four wires are connected as shown below.

The pin 1 at one end is connected to pin 3 at the other end and pin 2 is connected to pin 6 at the other end.Pin3 is connected to pin1 at the other end and pin6 is connected to pin1 at the other end.

1000BASE-T UTP CABLE

1000BASE-T cable contains four wires pairs.
For faster transmission of data 1000BASE-T allows the sending and receiving of data simultaneously.

The pin connections of the 1000BASE-T cable for straight-through connection and crossover connection are shown in the below diagram.
